Dr. Bourland has been in practice at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas since 1982. In July 2002, he relocated his practice to Suite 113 in the Margot Perot Center for Women and became the first Medical Director for the Breast Care Program at the Margot Perot Center. When asked about milestones during his career as a breast cancer surgeon, he replied:

" Some remarkable changes have occurred during my professional life that on the whole have had real benefit for the breast cancer patient. Early in my career, we developed guidelines for breast conserving surgery. In mid-career, we changed our attitudes about chemotherapy- a therapeutic decision that has had a profound impact on raising survival statistics. More recently, recognition that breast cancer staging could be accomplished using sentinel node mapping has lessened the morbidity from treatment in terms of arm edema. And lastly, the creation of the Breast Care Program at the Margot Perot Center is a huge improvement in screening for high risk patients and a valuable resource for the recently diagnosed woman with breast cancer. "

Dr. Bourland is a native of Mississippi. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and the University of Mississippi Medical School. He became a Texan in 1975 when he entered the surgical residency at Southwestern Medical School. He is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has served as Chairman of the Department of General Surgery at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas and as breast cancer consultant for OBGYN.NET.
